Character as a Structural Determinant of Personal Style of Police Officers’ Activity
Abstract
The main attention in the article is focused on the theoretical analysis of approaches already existing in psychology concerning the essence of the concept of «character». Questions are outlined regarding the meaning and formation of the character of the personality as a psychological determinant of personal style of police officers’ activity. The psychological structures of the personality in domestic and foreign psychology are considered, in which the essence of the personality and its structure are understood differently by directions and theories. It is noted that personality structure developed by V. G. Kovalev is the most well-established in psychology, the psychological content of which is the basis of our study, and we also analyzed the components of this structure. The attention is focused on the specific conditions and psychological characteristics of the police officers. An attempt was made to analyze the professiographic study of various types of police activity: investigator, detective officer of the criminal investigation department (criminal police), local police officer, taking into account their main professionally important qualities. It is mentioned that law enforcement activity leaves its mark on the individual and psychological characteristics of the personality of the policeman, which significantly affects the process, the result, as well as the personal style of their professional activity. Conversely, the formation of personality to a large extent occurs in the course of professional activity and under its influence. It is indeed important and necessary to form the personal style of professional activity of police officers. As well as improving the psycho-diagnostic tools and the creation of a generalized professional psychological model of law enforcement officers, which significantly affects the importance of the process of professional psychological selection of candidates for service in the National Police of Ukraine.
