Recognition and Understanding of Basic Emotions as Components of Emotional Awareness of Cadets
Abstract
Abstract: The article presents the results of an empirical study of emotional awareness of first-year cadets. Their ability to recognize basic human emotions by facial expressions, to understand and correctly interpret their emotions and the emotions of other people was analyzed. The purpose of the study is an empirical study of the emotional awareness of cadets. The research methodology consists of modern scientific ideas about the physiological basis of emotions and their differentiation. The research used methods of empirical psychological research (testing, questionnaires), comparative analysis, and the structural-logical method. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that the study of the features of emotional awareness of cadets at the beginning of professional training was carried out. It was established that the level of emotional awareness of first-year cadets is insufficient. Cadets do not always realize and understand the emotions they experience, they cannot always interpret them. They experience difficulties in recognizing and verbalizing basic emotions based on their facial expressions. Cadets are less confident in their own ability to understand their own and other people's emotions, compared to police officers of the National Police of Ukraine and civilians who are older than them. The cadets, like law students, police officers and civilians, did not recognize the emotion "contempt" among other basic emotions. The most recognizable basic emotion is "joy", which cadets recognized more often than law students, police officers, and civilians. However, the emotion "anger" is more recognized and the emotion "surprise" less recognized by university students than police officers. Graduates and police officers were more likely to fail to recognize the emotion of "adness", which is the opposite of joy, compared to civilians. The conducted research made it possible to draw a conclusion about the need to develop the emotional awareness of cadets.
