Psychological Features of Law Enforcement during the Russian Military Intervention

Abstract

Abstract. The aim of the article is to analyze the psychological characteristics of the professional activities of police officers in conditions of a state of war. The main focus is on highlighting possible psychological consequences of performing official duties during the Russian military intervention, which can be equated to professional activities during wartime. The relevance of the studied issue is due to the current complex military-political situation in our country, combined with the need to ensure high productivity and quality of the law enforcement system’s activities. Research methods such as analysis, synthesis, comparison, systematization, and generalization of information from scientific sources were applied. The main results of the theoretical study are as follows: 1) the author’s definition of professional activity has been formulated; 2) a set of characteristics of law enforcement activities in peacetime and wartime has been determined; 3) psychological consequences of law enforcement activities in the tense conditions of enemy military intervention have been identified. Any professional activity is defined as a type of qualified and socially demanded activity that requires appropriate training and is accompanied by intense physical and mental exertion in the process of execution. It allows the realization of the employee’s knowledge, skills, abilities, and serves as a source of their moral and material well-being. It is established that the professional activity of a law enforcement officer is characterized by a high degree of social responsibility, conservatism of value orientations, strict regulation of the conditions of its implementation, the employee’s integration into an already formed organizational structure, within which they must adhere to formalized norms and rules of activity, and comply with legal requirements. It is determined that law enforcement activity itself, both in peacetime and in wartime, is always associated with the risk to life and health. However, during wartime, it is characterized by a higher level of stress, a significant potential for psychological trauma, which negatively affects the course of cognitive mental processes and the overall psycho-emotional state of the employee. As a result, prolonged work in such conditions can lead to the transformation of the personality of a law enforcement officer. The practical value of the conducted research lies in the possibility of developing effective measures of psychological support for police officers, as well as determining the individual psychological traits that should be formed in police officers for the effective performance of official duties in conditions of a state of war.
